Hull College students and staff celebrated the grand opening of the Centre for Construction Trade Apprenticeships.

The centre was officially opened by BBC DIY SOS The Big Build project manager Mark Millar on Thursday 28th November and will act as a skills facility for construction apprentices, covering trades such as Carpentry and Joinery, Bricklaying, Maintenance Operations.

Also invited along to the event were 12 business sponsors including Dulux, Hobson and Porter, and Portwest. These businesses work in partnership with the college to provide materials, tools and advice.

Special guest Mark Millar was given a tour of the site and the facilities, meeting business sponsors and apprentices as he made his way around the site. When addressing the crowd, Mark said “It’s a brilliant industry to be involved with. Not only will you learn things with your hands, but it’s great for the brain too. There are always new skills to learn and new technology coming up with. You will work on so many different projects, and it’s all going to start here.”

As part of the opening, a commemorative plaque for former tutor Shaun Clark was revealed. Shaun worked at the college for 17 years and developed many learners to be industry ready.

To add a final flourish to the construction community feel of the day, Bricklaying apprentice Beth Skinner was presented new tools on behalf of Ox Tools. Beth had her tools stolen from her car earlier in the week, so having the support from the college to source and provide a new set was a god send for Beth, who said “Having your tool kit is how I do what I love - and that was all taken away from me. I wouldn’t have been able to work on the site if I didn’t have my tools. I’m grateful to the college and to Ox for helping me get back to work.”
